Foymount Rd Abandoned House

This old picturesque abandoned home sits on a grassy rise above County Road 512, out in the hills of Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan township west of Killaloe. It is a two-storey wood farmhouse with all the classic rural home features: a steep gable roof, a brick chimney, and a covered verandah running along the front and down one side. The porch is the detail that makes it a stop the car right now moment. Iron gingerbread brackets still hang along the top of the verandah, and the double front door has kept its decorative panels, all of it weathered down to bare wood. Shooting it from a three-quarter angle is the strongest composition, letting you look along the porch so the depth of the verandah and the line of brackets work as leading lines to you carry deep into the shot. Low sun brings out the grain and the peeling boards better than flat midday light. Bare trees add to the feeling of isolation and disrepair so aim for early spring or fall. A longer lens picks out the ironwork and the door or you can go with a wider lens to set the whole house on its rise with the trees around it. Make sure to shoot it from the roadside since the house is on private property and abandoned, so it's hard to tell how safe the interior remains. (Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan, Ontario, Canada)
