Fremantle War Memorial

The Fremantle War Memorial sits on the highest ground in town built to honor the men who never came home from the First World War. Lawns and rose beds spread out in every direction from the base to create a peaceful space of reflection. This hilltop gives you an amazing view looking out over the entire city in every direction. Red port cranes sit below you in one direction, container ships lie at anchor out in Gage Roads, and Garden Island runs low along the horizon. Fremantle rooftops fill everything between you and the water. The sun drops straight into the ocean off the western side and the stone appears to glow in that last light. Ideally take some extra time and stay on after dark too. The port works all night and the whole thing lights up. Eight smaller memorials ring the obelisk on three sides, plus there is a real torpedo, and a submarine periscope. There is only street parking at the top of the hill and it often fills up so you may have to walk in from a neighbouring street. The memorial is open 24 hours a day but there are servives on 25 April and 11 November. Ideally aim to be here for sunset and stay as the lights of the city come on around you.
