Gastown

Gastown - Photo by whereitsb1 / 1

Gastown is Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, offering a mix of cobblestone streets, Victorian brick architecture, and iconic landmarks that reward street and architectural photographers alike. The Steam Clock at the corner of Water and Cambie Streets is the obvious anchor shot, but the real opportunity is using the surrounding streetscape as your canvas: the gently curving brick facades, vintage lampposts, and uneven cobblestones make strong leading lines when shot low and wide with a 24mm or 35mm lens. Early morning gives you the best light and near-empty streets before the crowds arrive, and overcast days are common here and actually work in your favour, softening shadows on the brick textures. Head down Blood Alley for a narrower, more atmospheric frame, or look back toward the Steam Clock with the downtown skyline visible above the roofline for a sense of place and scale.
