Built in 1910, this elegant Second Empire skyscraper anchors the corner of West Hastings and Cambie with its ornate facade, mansard roof, and classical detailing that stands in sharp contrast to the modern towers surrounding it. Shoot from across the intersection to capture the full height and symmetry of the building, or move in close to isolate the decorative stonework, arched windows, and ironwork details with a mid-range zoom around 50-85mm. The building faces southeast, so morning light hits the main facade directly and brings out the warmth of the stone exterior. Overcast days work well too, eliminating harsh shadows and letting the architectural detail read clearly. The corner location gives you natural framing options from multiple angles, and the wide sidewalks on Hastings give you room to work without stepping into traffic. A tilt-shift or wide prime lens helps control distortion when shooting upward. (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
