Glencoe Lochan
Glencoe Lochan is a small, mirror-still mountain lake tucked inside a pine and larch forest at the foot of Glen Coe, designed to evoke the Canadian wilderness and delivering some of the most striking reflections in the Scottish Highlands. The water's surface is your primary subject here; position yourself low at the shoreline to maximise the reflection of the surrounding conifers and the rugged peaks beyond. The best compositions frame the treeline symmetrically across the calm water, though you can also work the wooden footbridges and forest paths as leading lines into the scene. Overcast mornings give you the flattest, most mirror-like reflections with soft, even light, while autumn transforms the larches into rich gold that contrasts beautifully against the dark pines. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well for the full panoramic effect. The car park off the B863 near Glencoe village is a short, easy walk to the water's edge.
