Dettifoss
Dettifoss is one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls, sending an enormous volume of glacial water crashing 44 metres into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon with a force you can feel in your chest before you even see it. The sheer scale and raw energy here make it endlessly photogenic, and you have two sides to shoot from, each offering a different perspective. The west bank gives you a more direct frontal view of the falls with easier access, while the east bank puts you closer to the edge with dramatic canyon angles and a rougher, more dramatic foreground of dark basalt rock. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well for capturing the full width and the surrounding canyon. Overcast days are ideal since bright sun creates harsh contrast and the mist can blow directly into your lens. Come early in the morning to avoid tour groups.
