This short loop trail in the Hoh Rain Forest pulls you into one of the most otherworldly forest environments in North America, where big-leaf maples are draped in thick curtains of club moss that hang down like green chandeliers. The soft, diffused light that filters through the canopy on overcast days is ideal for shooting here, eliminating harsh shadows and bringing out the deep, saturated greens of the moss and ferns. Overcast or lightly rainy conditions are genuinely better than sunshine, so do not wait for clear skies. Shoot low to emphasize the fern carpet against the hanging moss, or use a wide angle lens to capture the full scale of the draped trees arching overhead. A tripod helps in the low light under the canopy. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk, but arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds on the narrow path.
