Sol Duc Falls
Sol Duc Falls drops into a narrow basalt gorge carved by centuries of rushing water, splitting into multiple channels before converging below a wooden footbridge that serves as your primary shooting platform. The bridge gives you a head-on view of the falls with the gorge walls framing both sides, and a wide-angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well to capture the full scene including the mossy old-growth trees above. Overcast days are ideal here because the dense forest canopy already limits direct light, and flat diffused conditions bring out the deep greens of the moss and ferns without blown highlights on the white water. Use a tripod for long exposures to smooth the cascades, aiming for half a second to two seconds depending on flow. The trail is well-maintained and roughly 1.6 miles round trip from the trailhead, making it accessible for most visitors year-round. (Olympic National Park, Washington, United States)
