The Hardwaldturm climbs straight out of the forest floor near Dietlikon, an observation tower built entirely from timber cut in the Hardwald around it. From the paths below, it appears to be a tall wooden lantern standing high above the canopy. The slatted walls are fun to experiment with as the light shines between the wooden rows and creates shifting patterns across the stairs as you climb. You can pause so shoot the interior on the way up rather than just climbing to the top like most observation tours. Four separate platforms give you lots of options with one each framing the woodland from a slightly different height. At the top, the view opens across the valley towards the Glarus Alps in the south, Greifensee glints off to one side, and the Zurich airport sits close enough that planes might even drift through your frame. Clear mornings after the mist has settled give the sharpest views to the distant peaks. Warm evening light suits the raw wood and sunset can be stunning as the sky fills with colour. The tower is easily accessible from one of the so forest parking lots, like Waldegge to the east. The walk in takes roughly twenty minutes along easy, well signed trails through the peaceful forest. Entry is free, and there is a fountain and picnic area at the base of the tower if you want to take your time and wait for the perfect light to appear. Ideally pick a bright, calm day and give yourself plenty of time on each platform. (Dietlikon, Zürich, Switzerland)
