About Hetzdorfer Viadukt
Tall stone arches carry the Hetzdorfer Viadukt across the Flöha valley near Flöha, in the Ore Mountains of Saxony. This former railway bridge curves gently across the valley in with its grey granite and sandstone forming intricate patterns in the arches. Trains stopped using it in 1992, and a walking path now runs across the top creating amazing views out across the valley. If you want to highlight the size of the viaduct as is spans the valley you can climb the steep wooden stairs to the Hetzdorfer Bastei, a rocky lookout above the viaduct. From there the arches span the wooded valley, and on clear days the towers of Augustusburg Castle appear on the horizon. Out on the bridge, you look down onto the Flöha and the station at Hetzdorf. Plus there is a riverside path that lets you get right beside the viaduct so you can shoot up under the big arches to show the scale of the stonework. Low sun brings out the mix of grey granite and paler sandstone in the arches. There is small parking areas sitting near Hetzdorf station, and marked trails lead up to the bridge and over to the Bastei Lookout. (Flöha, Saxony, Germany)
