Bärenstein Summit Cross sits on a cleared ledge at the southern edge surrounded by benches and the view opening straight down the valley. The village of Bärenstein and the Czech town of Vejprty run together on the valley floor below. Beyond them the forested ridges of the Erzgebirge stack up in layers along the skyline. Plus you have amazing views out over the Cranzahl Reservoir. The cross is small, which makes it the perfect foreground to add a sense of scale to the huge views. You can easily set it low in a wide frame and let the ridges fill the rest, or use a telephoto lens across the rooftops to compress the town against the dark spruce slopes behind it. Because you are looking south, the sun crosses in front of you all day and the ridges flatten into haze by late morning. Early light comes in from the left and spreads across the slopes, then about an hour before sunset does the same from the right, with the valley already in shadow while the far peaks are still lit. Winter is the best time up here, when snow picks out every field boundary below and the mountian tops turn white against the endless blue sky. This summit is fairly easy to access with a road running up to the parking area by the Berggasthaus, and from there the cross is a short walk on the marked summit loop. You can also hike in from the Cranzahl Reservoir side, along a steep but well marked trail. (Bärenstein, Saxony, Germany)
