Hoggs Falls

Hoggs Falls - Photo by ranpenn1 / 1

Hoggs Falls is a wide, curtain-style plunge waterfall on the Boyne River, dropping about 7 metres over a broad limestone ledge that makes it feel more dramatic than its modest height suggests. The width of the falls is what sets it apart, and shooting straight on from the riverbed below gives you the full span of water across the frame. You can wade in during low water to get a close, low-angle perspective with the falls filling your shot; a wide-angle lens works well here. Overcast days are ideal since the soft diffused light eliminates harsh shadows in the gorge and lets you use longer exposures to smooth out the water. Polarizing filters help cut reflections on the wet rock. The walk from the parking lot on Lower Valley Road is short and flat, making this an easy stop. (Flesherton, Ontario, Canada)
