Hot Springs Cavern
Cave and Basin National Historic Site preserves the original hot springs that sparked the creation of Canada's first national park, and the cavern here offers a genuinely atmospheric setting for photography. Inside, warm mineral water still seeps through the cave walls, creating a moody, humid environment with soft diffused light filtering through openings in the rock. Shoot toward the cave mouth to use the natural light as a backlight, letting the mineral-streaked walls and turquoise pool glow in the foreground. A wide angle lens works well in the confined space, and a tripod is useful since interior light is dim. Outside, the boardwalk and historic bathhouse facade photograph nicely in morning light before crowds arrive. The site is wheelchair accessible and well maintained, making it easy to navigate while shooting. (Banff, Alberta, Canada)
