Inside Lockport Cave
The Lockport Cave on the Erie Canal was constructed in 1838. A water tunnel was blasted out of solid rock in the 1850s. It ran parallel to the Erie Canal, but it remained at the same height as the canal before the locks at Lockport. Further downstream the water was allowed to come down along the banks to power waterwheels. -from Wikipedia
