Perched at 3,454 meters on the saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, Jungfraujoch gives you access to a high-alpine landscape that would otherwise require serious mountaineering to reach. The Aletsch Glacier stretches away to the south in a sweeping curve of blue-white ice, best captured with a wide-angle lens from the Sphinx Observatory terrace to emphasize its scale. The surrounding peaks catch dramatic light in the early morning before cloud build-up begins, so aim to arrive on the first train of the day. Midday light can be harsh but works well for emphasizing texture in the ice and snow. Dress warmly regardless of the season, as temperatures are well below valley level even in summer. A polarizing filter helps cut glare off the snowfields and deepens the blue of the sky at altitude. (Grindelwald, Bern, Switzerland)
