Kaaterskill Falls is a dramatic two-tiered waterfall in the Catskill Mountains, dropping a combined 260 feet through a steep, forested gorge that has inspired painters and photographers for centuries. The classic shot is from the base of the upper falls, where you can frame the cascade framed by the surrounding rock amphitheater and surrounding trees. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well here to capture the full height and the cave-like recess behind the falls. Visit in late October for fall foliage color, or after heavy rain when the flow is strongest. Spring snowmelt also produces powerful conditions. Overcast days are ideal since direct sun creates harsh contrast in the shadowed gorge. The trail from Laurel House Road is about a half mile to the lower viewpoint, with a steeper climb to reach the upper tier; wear sturdy shoes as the rocks near the falls stay wet and slippery.
