Laurel House Trail
Laurel House Trail winds through the Kaaterskill Wild Forest in the Catskills, leading you along a forested path to the top of Kaaterskill Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in New York State. The upper falls viewpoint puts you right at the brink of the drop, where you can frame the cascade plunging into the gorge below, with layers of rock and dense hemlock forest filling the background. A wide angle lens works well here to capture the full sense of depth and scale. Shoot in the morning for soft, diffused light filtering through the canopy, or visit after rain when the falls run at full strength and mist adds atmosphere to the scene. The trail itself is moderately easy to walk but can be slippery near the water, so wear good footwear and take your time positioning near the edge. (Haines Falls, New York, United States)
