Tucked into a narrow cedar-filled valley north of Kyoto, Kifune Shrine is a series of tiered stone courtyards connected by steep steps and flanked by rows of red lanterns that glow beautifully in low light. The lantern-lined stone staircase leading to the main hall is the signature shot here; position yourself low on the steps and use a wide to standard focal length to compress the lanterns into a tunnel effect. Autumn brings vivid foliage that frames the red structures perfectly, while winter snow transforms the scene into something quietly dramatic. Early morning visits reward you with mist drifting through the trees and no crowds; the valley stays shaded well into the morning, so overcast days are actually ideal for even, flattering light. The path is paved but steep in sections, so sturdy footwear helps. (Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan)
