Laufenburg

Laufenburg sits on the Rhine where a medieval stone arch bridge connects the Swiss and German halves of what was once a single town, split by Napoleon in the 19th century. The Swiss side is the more photogenic of the two, with tightly packed historic buildings cascading down to the riverbank and the spire of the Catholic church rising cleanly above the roofline. Shooting from the bridge gives you strong leading lines and symmetrical river reflections, while positioning yourself along the riverbank lets you frame the full townscape with the water in the foreground. Early morning light is ideal, when the Rhine is calm and mist sometimes lingers over the water; golden hour in the evening also works well for warm tones on the stone facades. A mid-range zoom around 24-70mm covers most compositions comfortably, and the bridge and riverbank paths are easy to access on foot from the town center. (Laufenburg, Aargau, Switzerland)
