About Heiternplatz

Heiternplatz is a broad grassy square on the hill just above Zofingen's old town, surrounded by tall linden trees. The town laid it out in 1745 as a parade ground where the local militia gathered to drill, and the first set of trees went in a year later. A few of those originals are still standing, making them more than 250 years old. School classes planted a second, outer ring in the 1950s, so the open field is wrapped in two layers of lush greenery. This peaceful greenspace lets you walk along the rows of trees so you can experiment with lining the trunks up like columns. On the south end of the field there's an old stone fountain that once stood down in the old town square that still has its intricate carvings. From the edge of the hill you look out over the rooftops of Zofingen and across the Wigger valley. Autumn turns the rows of trees into a series of warm yellow, and orange tones. The low morning or evening sun stretches out between the trunks to create long shadows across the grass. The Heitere Open Air music festival fills the grounds every August, so check the dates if you want the trees to yourself. Make sure to plan in some extra time so you can pair it with the deer park next door. (Zofingen, Aargau, Switzerland)
