Site patrimonial du Moulin-Paradis is a small historic mill site built into a natural drop in the ground beside a stream. Two buildings make it up, a water-powered flour mill and the blacksmith's forge that both date back to the second half of the 1800s. The mill doubled as a house, which is why its windows sit scattered across the walls instead of in tidy rows. Timber footbridges lead into the upper storeys, which is how the builders got around the slope, and they make a great structure to compose around. Getting below and shooting up through them will give you a unique angle and leading lines to experiment with. Small rural forges like this one have mostly vanished from the Bas-Saint-Laurent, so the buildings are worth photographing as a pair rather than picking one. Snow and bare trees suit weathered wood, and spring runoff puts the stream back to work under the buildings. Nothing here is set up for visitors, so work from chemin du Moulin-Paradis and ask before going closer. (Kamouraska, Quebec, Canada)
