About Oiseau sur Colonne

Oiseau sur colonne stands in a planting bed outside the tourist information office in Rivière-du-Loup. Marcel Braitstein made it in painted steel and it went up here in 2002. The bird sits on top of a tall segmented column, opening out into a fan of thin spikes. It belongs to the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent collection and is stop sixteen on the town's public art circuit. The dark steel silhouettes perfectly against a rich blue sky, plus the spikes really pop with nothing behind them. Getting low along the path lets the column carry the bird above the surrounding plants, almost like it is in flight. Ornamental grasses and shrubs fill the bed around the base, which softens the bottom of the frame. They change through the year, so the same shot looks different in autumn. A red railway caboose sits on display a few steps away. There are free maps of the art circuit are handed out inside so you can easily explore the whole collection while you are in the area.
