About Cap Saumon Lighthouse
Cap-au-Saumon Lighthouse sits on a rocky bluff above the St. Lawrence River with nothing around it but spruce and the river. This photogenic white eight-sided concrete tower with a red lantern is surrounded by a cluster of white keepers' buildings linked by wooden stairs and walkways. The tower is only 14m, so its easy to include the whole station on its rock in your compositions. Plus the way the buildings step down the slope toward the water gives a great flow to the composition. The 1894 fog alarm building at the edge of the site is the oldest thing there and worth a tighter frame of its own. Being on the north shore, the station looks south over the river, so the white tower and dwellings take direct sun for most of the day. Late afternoon puts the sun down the river to the west, which side-lights the tower and picks out the eight faces of the concrete. If you are lucky a bank of fog will roll up the river and blanket the entire area with the red lantern the only colour left. The station is privately leased and rented out by the week, so the buildings and grounds are off limits unless you are the tenant, so you will need to commit to staying out here for a few days if you want to capture this lighthouse. The walk in from the main road is long and steep, so you will also want to confirm the trail before you go. (Saint-Siméon, Quebec, Canada)
