Leolani Cove

Leolani Cove - Photo by calebseyemedia1 / 1

Leolani Cove sits tucked beneath the dramatic cliffs of Princeville on Kauai's north shore, offering an intimate combination of jagged lava rock, clear turquoise water, and towering green cliffs that frame nearly every composition naturally. You can work the shoreline rocks as foreground interest with the cliffs rising behind, or position yourself higher on the trail to capture the full scale of the cove from above. Early morning light is ideal here, hitting the cliff faces with warm tones while keeping the water calm and reflective before the wind picks up. A wide angle lens between 16mm and 24mm helps you capture the verticality of the cliffs alongside the water, though a mid-range zoom gives you flexibility for tighter shots of wave action on the rocks. The trail down can be steep and slippery, so wear solid footwear and arrive with extra time to scout your footing before the light gets good. (Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii, United States)
