Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church is a century-old wooden New England-style mission church painted a deep forest green, set against the dramatic ridgelines and often cloud-draped peaks of the Hanalei Valley. The color contrast between the church and the bright tropical foliage behind it is the main draw, and a wide or standard lens in the 24-50mm range lets you capture the full facade with the mountains rising behind. Shoot from across the small lawn directly in front for a clean, symmetrical composition, or step to the side to include the surrounding palm trees and garden. Morning light is ideal here, especially when low clouds cling to the peaks after rain, adding atmosphere and depth. The grounds are generally accessible and uncrowded early in the day. Overcast skies actually work well, keeping the green tones rich without harsh shadows. (Hanalei, Kauaʻi, Hawaii, United States)
