Liverpool Cathedral
Liverpool Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the world, built in warm red sandstone on a ridge above the city, and its sheer scale makes it a rewarding subject from almost any angle. Outside, shooting from the lower ground to the south and west emphasizes the dramatic vertical rise of the tower and the sweeping buttresses; a wide angle lens, something in the 16-24mm range, works well here to capture the full height without cutting anything off. Inside, the nave offers one of the most powerful architectural shots in England, with those soaring Gothic arches drawing your eye down a long corridor of stone and light; arrive on a bright morning when sunlight filters through the stained glass on the south side. If you climb the tower, you get a 360-degree view of Liverpool with the Mersey and Wirral stretching out to the west, best in late afternoon when the light is warm and directional. Entry to the cathedral is free, and it is rarely crowded early in the day. (Liverpool, England)
