Rydal Water

Rydal Water is a small, serene lake in the Lake District, framed by the fells of Loughrigg Fell to the south and Nab Scar to the north, with lone trees rising from the shallows that make for instantly compelling compositions. The northern shoreline path gives you classic reflections of the surrounding fells on calm mornings, while the eastern end near the outflow offers intimate framing with reeds and rocky edges in the foreground. Early morning is the best time to visit, when mist often sits on the water and the light is soft and directional; autumn adds rich colour to the fellsides above. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of water and sky, while a short telephoto lets you isolate the solitary trees. The path along the northern shore is easy walking and accessible from a small car park near Rydal village. (Rydal, Cumbria, England)
