Todd Crag is a small rocky hilltop sitting above Ambleside that gives you the perfect elevated view of Lake Windermere. The view from the top looking south down the full length of Windermere with the fells stacked on either side makes the lake feel endless. Sunrise is when this spot is at its best. The early light hits the lake and the fells to the east, and on autumn mornings mist often sits low over the lake with the tops of the hills poking through. Boats moored along the shoreline add a sense of scale to wider shots. The walk to Todd Crag is fairly straight foward and starts right in the centre of Ambleside. From Miller Bridge Car Park you cut through Rothay Park, pass a large stone circle sculpture called Turning Point, then head up a steep lane between houses before the path opens onto the fellside. Lily Tarn sits along the hike and on calm mornings it is worth pausing to experiment with reflections. The hike is about 3 km out and back and takes under two hours at an easy pace. It is a quick, rewarding shooting adventure that you can do before breakfast and still be back in Ambleside for coffee. (Ambleside, Cumbria, England)
