Lower Falls is one of three major waterfalls on the Genesee River inside Letchworth State Park, dropping through a dramatic gorge with towering shale and sandstone walls that close in on either side. The falls themselves are wide and powerful, and the gorge context gives you a sense of scale that sets this apart from most waterfall shots. You can shoot from the rim trail above for a broad overview framing the falls within the canyon walls, or work your way down closer to the riverbank for tighter compositions with more spray and foreground detail. Overcast days are ideal for controlling contrast and bringing out the rich greens of the gorge walls, though golden hour light catching the upper rim can be striking. A wide angle lens handles the full scene well, while a longer focal length lets you isolate the falls from the opposite rim. Wear waterproof footwear if you plan to get close to the water.
