Marché Jean Talon

Marché Jean-Talon is one of North America's largest open-air markets, a vibrant grid of vendor stalls, colorful produce, and a surrounding covered arcade that gives you both shaded and open shooting environments. The real draw is the density of color and texture, so get in close with a 50mm or short telephoto to isolate towers of fruit, bundles of flowers, and the faces of vendors and shoppers. The covered perimeter walkway offers soft, diffused light even on bright days, making it reliable for shooting at almost any hour. That said, weekday mornings are best for a calmer atmosphere and richer light before the midday crowds arrive. Working from a low angle looking down the stalls creates strong leading lines through the market. On weekends the energy is higher, which suits street-style candid work. Parking is available nearby and the market is also easily reached by metro. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
