Mardalsfossen is one of Norway's most dramatic waterfalls, dropping 297 metres in a single free-falling plunge before continuing down the valley for a total descent of 655 metres. It only flows at full power between 20 June and 20 August, when the hydroelectric company releases water, so timing your visit within that window is essential. You can photograph it from the valley floor near Eikesdalen village, where a wide-angle lens lets you capture the full height of the fall against the steep rock face and surrounding peaks. The falls face west, making morning light flattering for shadow detail on the cliff, while overcast days reduce harsh contrast and bring out the lush green surroundings. A telephoto lens helps compress the layers of mist and rock. Bring waterproofs, as spray reaches surprisingly far, and wear sturdy footwear if you plan to hike closer up the trail.
