Mill Park Falls

Mill Park Falls is a compact but rewarding waterfall location built around the ruins of a historic mill on the Sacandaga River, where multiple cascades, a picturesque metal footbridge, and old stone foundations give you layers of visual interest to work with. Shoot from the bridge itself to frame the falls straight-on, or drop down to the rocky shoreline for a lower angle that lets you use the water as a foreground element. A wide-angle lens works well here to capture the full scene, while a telephoto lets you isolate individual cascades. Overcast days are ideal since the tree canopy and canyon walls can create harsh shadows in direct sun; cloudy light brings out the texture in the water and stonework. A polarizing filter helps reduce glare on the water. The site is easy to walk to and the varied terrain gives you plenty of spots to set up. (Lake Luzerne, New York, United States)
