Mill Pond
Mill Pond is a quiet, reflective body of water tucked just off W Mountain Road in a rural corner of upstate New York, offering clean mirror-like reflections of surrounding trees that become exceptional when fall foliage peaks in mid to late October. Position yourself along the bank to capture the treeline doubling in still water, or look for compositions that include any docks, reeds, or overhanging branches to add foreground interest. Early morning is the strongest time to visit, when mist often rises off the surface and the light is soft and directional before wind picks up and breaks the reflection. A wide angle lens works well for sweeping landscape shots, while a short telephoto lets you compress the foliage and its reflection together. Parking is simple along the road and the terrain is flat and easy to navigate. Polarizing filters help cut glare on overcast days when reflections can still be striking.
