Mistaya Canyon
Mistaya Canyon is a compact slot canyon carved by the Mistaya River into dramatically sculpted limestone, with swirling walls, deep potholes, and a wooden bridge that puts you directly above the rushing water. Shoot from the bridge for a top-down perspective into the gorge, then work your way along the viewing paths on either side to find angles where the canyon walls curve and compress into tight leading lines. The canyon runs roughly north to south, so midday light can be harsh and flat; overcast days are ideal here, softening the contrast and letting the texture of the eroded rock read clearly without blown highlights. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well for emphasizing the depth of the walls, while a polarizer helps cut glare off the water. The trail from the parking lot is short and paved, making it easy to access. (Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada)
