Rising dramatically above Waterfowl Lakes in Banff National Park, Mount Chephren is one of the most striking alpine subjects in the Canadian Rockies, its sheer limestone face and pyramidal silhouette reflecting in the calm waters below. The classic composition puts you at the lakeshore with the mountain centered or slightly off-center, using the still water as a mirror for the peak and sky above. Early morning is the ideal time to shoot, when winds are calm and the reflection is at its clearest, and the soft golden light catches the face of the mountain as the sun rises. A wide angle lens works well for pulling in the full reflection and foreground shoreline, though a short telephoto can isolate the summit against the sky. Pull off at the Waterfowl Lakes parking area along the Icefields Parkway and walk a short distance to the water's edge for an unobstructed view. (Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada)
