Montane Mansion is one of Hong Kong's most striking examples of brutalist social housing, a massive E-shaped concrete complex in Quarry Bay that draws photographers for its dramatic stacked balconies and symmetrical density. The two inner courtyards are the main attraction; position yourself at the center of either courtyard and shoot straight up with a wide angle lens, around 16 to 24mm, to capture the converging lines of balconies stretching toward a narrow strip of sky. Overcast days work well here because direct sunlight creates harsh shadows across the facades, while soft diffused light brings out the texture and depth of the concrete. Early morning is your best bet for fewer people in the frame if you want a clean architectural shot, though midday brings residents out and adds life to street-level compositions. The building is residential and still fully occupied, so move quietly, be respectful, and avoid photographing directly into people's homes. (Quarry Bay, Hong Kong)
