About Museum of Liverpool

The Museum of Liverpool is a free museum down on the waterfront at Pier Head. It focuses on telling the story of the city, especially highlighting the importance of the port, the music, the football, the culture and everyday life in Liverpool going back centuries. It opened in 2011 and was the first national museum in the country built around a single city. The building itself is quite eye-catching with its pale cream stone that appears to weave together down each side. The shape was inspired bythe trading ships that used to work this stretch of the river. Each end has an enormous window, one facing back into the city and one facing out over the Mersey River, to highlight Liverpool's important relationship between the city and the river. It sits right beside the three big Edwardian buildings on the waterfront, and the contrast between the old stone and the new is worth pausing to capture. If you are here to focus on the exterior aim to come in the evening when the sun sets over the water and the light warms up all that pale stone. Plus the light from inside those huge windows highlight the museum's unique architecture. While you are inside, the main staircase is just begging to be photographed. It's wide curve runs up through the middle of the building in a crisp spiral that is photogenic from both directly below or above. Plus those two big windows give you amazing views from the upper floors as well. The museum is closed one day a week so make sure to check their schedule if shooting the interior is your goal.
