Nakelele Blowhole
Nakalele Blowhole is a dramatic coastal feature on Maui's rugged northwest shore, where powerful ocean swells funnel through a lava rock cavity and erupt in a towering plume of water and mist that can shoot 50 feet or more into the air. The surrounding terrain of weathered black lava, tidal pools, and crashing surf gives you strong foreground textures to work with, and a wide-angle lens works well for capturing the blowhole in context with the jagged coastline. Position yourself above and to the side of the blowhole rather than directly in front, both for safety and to get a cleaner angle against the sky or ocean. Overcast days can actually work in your favor here, reducing harsh shadows on the dark lava. The trail down from the highway pulloff is steep and uneven, so wear solid footwear and give yourself extra time. (Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
