The National Military Cemetery sits inside Beechwood Cemetery in the east end of Ottawa. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces and veterans are buried here, from both world wars through Korea, Bosnia and Afghanistan. Beechwood itself dates to 1873 and is a National Historic Site. The headstones are uniform and set in long rows. Getting low at the end of a row and lets them run away from you. A Cross of Sacrifice stands in Section 27, put up by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the late 1950s. The ground around it was singled out when Beechwood was designated, for the cross and the matching stones together. A granite memorial and two flagpoles mark the ceremonial area at the west entrance. Low sun across the rows in the morning or evening does the most. Autumn colour is strong here, and snow simplifies everything. This is an active burial ground and people come to visit graves. Funerals happen through the week, so keep back and keep quiet. Ceremonies run through the year, including Remembrance Day. The grounds are open to the public with no charge, and paths link the military sections. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
