Carnegie Columns and Fountain
Tucked into the wooded Rockcliffe Rockeries, these neoclassical stone columns are remnants of Ottawa's 1906 Carnegie Public Library, demolished in the early 1970s and relocated here alongside a decorative fountain. The combination of weathered limestone, overgrown vegetation, and dappled forest light gives the site a genuinely atmospheric, almost ruined quality that rewards careful composition. Shoot through the columns to frame the fountain beyond, or get low and use the stonework as foreground interest against the surrounding trees. Overcast days work particularly well here because the soft diffused light brings out the texture of the aged stone without harsh shadows. The site is tucked along a quiet path in the Rockeries, so wear comfortable shoes and give yourself time to explore multiple angles. A mid-range zoom or a 35mm prime gives you flexibility in the tight wooded space. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
