About Recycling Sculpture
A large steel sculpture stands on the grass beside rue Fraser in Rivière-du-Loup. It is built from weathered steel, with truss sections rising into an arch and two tall perforated cylinders stand either side, punched through with round holes. The piece belongs to Publiqu'Art, a circuit of around forty outdoor works spread across the town. Most of them come from the collection of the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent, and the circuit has been running close to twenty years. The rust creates warm contrast against the grass and the dark building behind it. Getting low and shooting up through the arch lets you place the rusted lettering against a rich blue sky. The holes in the cylinders create patterns of light across the metal that are fun to experiment with. Other works on the circuit are a short walk away so take some time to explore them by wandering through town. (Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, Canada)
