This hidden gem beneath City Hall Park is one of New York's most architecturally stunning spaces, a Guastavino-tiled wonder of arched ceilings, brass chandeliers, and elegant skylights that let in soft natural light from street level. Built in 1904 and closed to the public in 1945, the curved platform and ornate brickwork make it unlike anything else in the subway system. Your best option for photography is the New York Transit Museum's occasional guided tours, which give you direct access to the platform; bring a wide-angle lens to capture the sweeping arches and the full curve of the space. A tripod is ideal since the lighting is dim and atmospheric. You can also ride the 6 train past the station without exiting, shooting through the windows as the train loops around, though results are hit or miss. Come prepared with a fast lens and high ISO capability. (New York City, New York, United States)
