Old Leith Pier
The old Leith Pier extends into the entrance basin of Leith Docks, its decaying timber framework slowly reclaiming itself to the water, making it one of the more quietly compelling decay subjects near Edinburgh. The weathered wooden posts and crossbeams create strong repeating lines that work well as leading elements drawing the eye out toward the dock basin and the industrial waterfront beyond. Shoot from the shoreline at low tide to expose more of the rotting structure below the waterline, or get low and wide with a 16-24mm lens to emphasize the pier's length against the sky. Overcast days soften the light and suit the mood of the scene well, while golden hour adds warmth to the aged wood. The area is accessible on foot from the Shore district and the ground around the pier can be uneven and muddy, so solid footwear is worth bringing. (Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom)
