Western Harbour Lighthouse

Western Harbour Lighthouse stands at the exposed tip of the western breakwater in Leith, a decommissioned structure slowly being reclaimed by weathering and decay. The peeling paint, rusted ironwork, and crumbling stonework make it a compelling subject for gritty, textural shots, and the long straight pier leading out to it gives you a natural leading line to work with. Walk the breakwater and shoot back toward the lighthouse with the Firth of Forth opening up behind it, or position yourself low to incorporate the wave-splashed concrete in the foreground. Overcast days suit this location well, keeping the mood moody and even, though golden hour adds warmth that contrasts nicely against the weathered surfaces. The breakwater is exposed and can be slippery in wet conditions, so wear grippy footwear. A mid-range zoom gives you flexibility to shift between wide environmental shots and tighter detail work on the decay. (Edinburgh, Scotland)
