“Out of Order” Sculpture
This iconic public artwork by sculptor David Mach arranges twelve red British telephone boxes in a cascading, toppling sequence, as if they are falling like dominoes along the pavement. The composition practically builds itself, as the dramatic diagonal line of the boxes gives you a ready-made leading line to work with. Shoot from a low angle at one end of the row to exaggerate the perspective and sense of motion, or get in close on the collision points between boxes for abstract detail shots. Overcast days work well here because flat light brings out the rich red of the boxes without harsh shadows, though golden hour adds warmth and drama. A wide angle lens suits the full sequence, while a short telephoto lets you compress the stack for a more chaotic effect. The sculpture sits on a public pavement and is easy to access at any time.
