Sitting at the foot of the Royal Mile with the dramatic crags of Arthur's Seat rising directly behind it, the Palace of Holyroodhouse offers one of Edinburgh's most striking architectural compositions. The baroque facade of the main entrance works beautifully as a subject on its own, but the real magic comes from positioning yourself to include the volcanic rock face looming in the background, creating a layered shot that blends royal grandeur with raw landscape. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions well here. Shoot in the early morning to avoid crowds gathering along the forecourt and to catch soft directional light on the stonework. The surrounding Holyrood Park gives you elevated vantage points to compress the palace against Arthur's Seat using a longer focal length. Weekday mornings are quieter, and the gate area and abbey ruins on the eastern side add moody secondary subjects worth exploring. (Edinburgh, Scotland)
