Holyrood Abbey

Holyrood Abbey is a striking roofless ruin sitting directly beside the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with exposed stone walls, soaring Gothic arches, and open sky where the ceiling once was. The lack of a roof makes it a natural light studio, with sunlight streaming through the window openings and casting dramatic shadows across the carved stonework throughout the day. Shoot looking down the nave toward the east window for a strong symmetrical composition, or work the side aisles where layered arches create depth and framing. Overcast days soften the contrast and bring out the texture in the pale sandstone, while golden hour adds warmth to the stonework. A wide angle lens works well to capture the full height of the arches without distortion. Access is through the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which charges an entry fee, so plan accordingly and arrive early to avoid crowds. (Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom)
