Palazzo Lombardia

Palazzo Lombardia - Photo by David Lally1 / 1

Palazzo Lombardia is Milan's striking regional government complex, most famous for its soaring central atrium, where a geometric glass and steel roof creates an intricate web of patterns overhead. The atrium is the main draw for photographers: point your camera straight up from the center of the floor for a symmetrical, abstract composition that fills the frame with repeating triangular shapes and diffused natural light. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works best here, and midday light filtering through the glass ceiling gives you even, soft illumination without harsh shadows. Outside, the curved towers and sweeping plaza reward wider establishing shots, especially in the early morning when the space is quiet and the light is clean. Entry to the atrium is free and open to the public during business hours; weekday mornings are the least crowded. (Milan, Lombardy, Italy)
