Panther Pond

Panther Pond - Photo by Terry Branham1 / 1

Panther Pond is a quiet Adirondack lake sitting just off Route 3, where calm water reflects the surrounding forest and sky in a way that rewards patience and good timing. The wide, open shoreline gives you room to work with foreground elements like rocks, reeds, or fallen logs to anchor your compositions, and the unobstructed view across the water makes it ideal for symmetrical reflection shots. Sunrise is the standout time to visit, when mist often rises off the surface and warm light catches the treeline; overcast mornings also produce glassy, even reflections without harsh shadows. Parking along the roadside is easy and the spot is immediately accessible, so you can set up quickly without a long hike. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of water and sky, while a telephoto can isolate details in the distant treeline. (Tupper Lake, New York, United States)
