Pathé Tuschinski
Pathé Tuschinski is one of the most ornate cinemas in the world, a 1921 masterpiece blending Art Deco, Amsterdam School, and Jugendstil into an exterior that is immediately recognizable on Reguliersbreestraat. The facade rewards a wide-angle lens, around 16 to 24mm, to capture the full vertical sweep of the tower and the rich detailing above the entrance. Shoot from directly across the street or slightly to one side to include the illuminated marquee as a foreground element. Evening is the best time to visit, when the warm artificial lighting brings out the gold tones of the facade and creates a dramatic contrast with the darkening sky. The street is pedestrianized enough to set up without too much interference, though weekend crowds can be heavy. Step inside if you can, as the lobby and auditorium offer layered compositions full of color and ornamental detail. (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands)
